Don't normally write on forums, but couldn't believe how confusing the information was on here and wanted to clarify some things for confused people out there.
Me and my boyfriend, both from the UK, have both collected our visa's yesterday from the chinese embassy in Hanoi (March 2012) and it seemed very straight forward.
We were asked to complete the visa application form (A and B) and provide a photo, copy of both our passport and vietnamese visa. We did however also provide bank statements, a future flight to Australia (but not a flight out of China) and the front page of our travel insurance - as we went prepared after reading reviews on the internet. Not sure whether the extra items helped our application.
Before getting to the embassy make sure you at least download and read a copy of the visa application form, as it is quite detailed i.e. it asks for name and telephone numbers of 4 hostels you are staying at in China (we did not provide confirmation of bookings).
But unlike some reviews on the forums, the embassy staff were all very polite and they were able to answer our queries.
Visa cost USD $30, is valid for 30 days from the date of entry (not date of issue). It takes four working days to issue. You are not told whether you will be successful on lodging the application, you have to wait to find out on the fourth day.
We had to pay the fee at the chinese bank in hanoi, moto taxi there and back for 1 person was 60,000 (1 person can sort the payment for both people).
At the bank you get charged 100,000 dong per person for paying in dong, so have the US dollars with you on arrival. If you don't, the bank can recommend a money exchange place which my boyfriend went to and they gave a reasonable rate.
Good luck!"
